Appaloosa

There are different colors and types of the Appaloosa Color. There is a Leopard Appaloosa, Blanket Appaloosa, Varnish Appaloosa, Few Spots Appaloosa, Frost Appaloosa and a Snowflake Appaloosa. The base color can be bay, black, chestnut, palomino, buckskin, grulla, or dun. Most people associate with the Appaloosa Horse because of its unique spotting patterns. Different from Dappled Horses you often see in grey horses and other horse colors, Appaloosa markings overlay the base coat color, and have several pattern variations.

They different styles and spotted patterns include the Blanket Appaloosa, Leopard Appaloosa, Snowflake Appaloosa, Frost Appaloosa, Varnish Appaloosa, and Few Spot Appaloosa (see pictures below). The Blanket Appaloosa is white over the hip that may extend from the tail to the base of the neck. The spots inside the blanket are the same color as the horse's base coat.

The Leopard Appaloosa is a horse whose base color is nearly obscured by its Appaloosa white patterning covering up to 90% of its body. Horse may exhibit patches of color on the head, knees, elbows, and flank (called "varnish marks"). Some may have as few as only one or two spots.

The Snowflake Appaloosa are horses with white spots and flecks on a dark body. Typically the white spots increase in number and size as the horse ages.

Varnish Appaloosa Horses have dark points on the legs and head, and some spots or roaning over a light body. It may occur in conjunction with another spotting style and change with age. Often starts out as a solid colored horse that gets more white as it ages, but is not a grey.

Frost Appaloosas are similar to Varnish Appaloosas but the white hairs are limited to the back, loins, and the neck. It may occur in conjunction with another spotting style and change with age. Often starts out as a solid colored horse that gets more white as it ages.
