Horse Harness is one of the common types of the horse tack which is use to the horse for them to tug various kinds of drawn vehicles which includes, sleigh, carriage and even the wagon. There are also some other harness available for other animals but this is not suitable to be used with the horses as it is not especially designed for them. Using some harness on horses may refer to the term harnessing.

Two Main Classes of Horse Harness

Actually, there are two main classes that horse harness has. It is the breaststrap or the breastcollar design and the other one is called as the collar and the hames design.

  1. Breaststrap Design – this design is ideal to be used in some light works just like some horse show competitions and this specifically made to pull only some light carts. It can be also used for light hauling as it puts the weight of its carrier on the area of the sternum of the horse and to the close windpipe. It is commonly described to be a padded strap that is positioned around the chest of the horse from side to another side.
  2. Collar Design – this is different from the other design as it totally puts the weight of the carrier to the shoulder of the horse, without any problem of the horse not getting enough air supply. If you are going to do a heavy hauling, it is best to use a harness that has a horse collar in order for the horse to use up his full strength and weight. It is also commonly called as the full collar. It is a padded kind of loop that is just enough around the neck of the horse and is in the upright position to fit the round neck of the animal.
