It took several firefighters and a backhoe to free an exhausted horse sunk belly-deep in mud Tuesday morning.

It’s not known how the horse became stuck in a large muddy hole behind a home at 4821 SW 139th Ave.

Firefighters had to dig out mud clinging to the animal’s legs. They then tied a rope around her belly and pulled her out with a backhoe.

Though free, the horse is exhausted. Firefighters gave her smelling salts, and after hours spent laying on the ground, she got onto her feet around 2 p.m.
