Peter Minikes’s Georgica Stable, which had no graded stakes wins prior to this weekend, gained its second Grade 1 victory in two days on Sunday when Indy Five Hundred fired gamely in the stretch for a four-length win in the $244,000 Garden City Breeders’ Cup Handicap (G1) at Belmont Park for three-year-old fillies.
Indy Five Hundred, who came in off a close second-place finish to Sand Springs in the Lake Placid Handicap (G2) at Saratoga Race Course on August 17, closed from the back of the pack under rider Pat Day to collar favorite Dimitrova in midstretch and drive on to complete 1 1/8 miles in 1:48.44 over turf rated good.
“This has been the best weekend of my life,” said Minikes, who won the Gazelle Handicap (G1) with 48-to-1 outsider Buy the Sport at Belmont on Saturday.
“I’m shaking,” said trainer Bobby Barbara, who gained his first Grade 1 win. “Oh my God! Pat said she broke fine and as soon as he put his hands on her mouth, she just threw her head and then spit it out and he just left her alone. He said he was so full of horse at the three-eighths pole, she just wanted to explode turning for home.”
Dimitrova, winner of the American Oaks at Hollywood Park on July 5, finished second, with French-based invader Campsie Fells (UAE) another 2¼ lengths back in third. Sand Springs set the pace before fading late to finish seventh.
Minikes said he would point Indy Five Hundred to the Queen Elizabeth II Invitational Challenge Cup Stakes (G1) at Keeneland Race Course on October 11.
Indy Five Hundred has three wins in nine career starts and earnings of $239,250.
Bred in Kentucky by Palisades Investments N. V. Inc., Indy Five Hundred is out of Group 2 winning Lyphard mare Lyphard’s Delta, a daughter of Grade 1 winner Proud Delta. She is a full sister to Grade 3 winner Delta Princess.
Minikes purchased Indy Five Hundred for $210,000 from Lane’s End, agent for consignor Chanteclair Farm, at the 2001 Keeneland September yearling sale.
